Entrepreneurial Beliefs and Agency under Knightian Uncertainty

چکیده
Abstract At the centenary of Frank H. Knight’s Risk, Uncertainty, and Profit (1921), we explore continuing relevance Knightian uncertainty to theory practice entrepreneurship. There are three challenges facing such assessment. First, RUP is complex difficult interpret. The key but neglected element that account not solely about risk as states nature, how an agent’s beliefs uncertain outcomes confidence in those guide their choices. Second, only effort this area. His subsequent career led elsewhere, so he did engage with interpretations work. Third, much current literature emphasizes decisions must be different under two nature a consequent misunderstanding entrepreneurial agency. This paper addresses each challenge sequence. explicate (1921) approach explain why murky. complement interpretation, examine P. Ramsey’s subjective probabilities help clarify murky approach. Knight-Ramsey does require actor’s behaviors determined by class environment (whether risk, uncertainty, or ambiguity) they face. Return Predictability under Knightian Uncertainty
The predictability of stock and bond excess returns is investigated from an investment perspective in the presence of Knightian uncertainty. Uncertainty about the return distribution is formalized with the maxmin expected utility approach of Gilboa and Schmeidler (1989). It is analyzed how risk and uncertainty aversion di¤er in their e¤ects on optimal portfolio choice. Most importantly, it is s...
متن کاملInvestment under Uncertainty, Heterogeneous Beliefs, and Agency Conflicts
We develop a structural model to investigate the effects of asymmetric beliefs and agency conflicts on dynamic principal–agent relationships. Optimism has a first-order effect on incentives, investments, and output, which could reconcile the private equity puzzle. Asymmetric beliefs cause optimal contracts to have features consistent with observed venture capital and research and development (R...
متن کاملPlanning under Risk and Knightian Uncertainty
Two noteworthy models of planning in AI are probabilistic planning (based on MDPs and its generalizations) and nondeterministic planning (mainly based on model checking). In this paper we: (1) show that probabilistic and nondeterministic planning are extremes of a rich continuum of problems that deal simultaneously with risk and (Knightian) uncertainty; (2) obtain a unifying model for these pro...
متن کاملViability and Arbitrage under Knightian Uncertainty
We reconsider the microeconomic foundations of financial economics under Knightian Uncertainty. In a general framework, we discuss the absence of arbitrage, its relation to economic viability, and the existence of suitable nonlinear pricing expectations. Classical financial markets under risk and no ambiguity are contained as special cases, including various forms of the Efficient Market Hypoth...
متن کاملConsumption and Saving Under Knightian Uncertainty
This paper studies consumption/saving problem under Knightian uncertainty in a two period setting. The multiple-priors utility model is adopted. The effects of income uncertainty and capital uncertainty on optimal savings are analyzed by deriving closed form solutions.
